Earth Day right around the corner

Calgary, AB, Canada / RTBN

Earth Day is an annual day where over 190 countries and 6 million Canadians take part in activities that will help protect our environment.

The day of civic participation and action will take place on April 22 and the theme for this year’s Earth Day celebration will be Plastics vs Planet.

If you are looking for something to do to help our world get a little healthier, SAIT will be hosting an Earth Day garbage clean-up around SAIT campus on Monday.

SAIT is asking volunteers to register and select one of the two volunteer time slots at either 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. where there is enough space for 40 volunteers at each block.

Bring a few friends down to Heritage Hall where a safety orientation will take place, gloves and garbage pickers will be handed out, and a free lunch for all volunteers will be provided.

Putting litter back in the trash is important to the environment as it protects vulnerable species, improving air quality, and ensures we have clean drinking water.

Students around campus have been reading the signs posted on the poster boards and think it is important to pick up garbage around SAIT even if they are unable to attend the volunteer session.

“I think we should just pick up what we see, if we see something on the ground, ya know just take a second to pick it up and throw it out,” says SAIT student Vira Shabanova.

If you want to help out our world in other ways as well, try a few of these tips and tricks to help reduce your economic footprint: Use reusable serviceware for dine-in, turn the water off when brushing your teeth, and bringing your own bags to the grocery store.
