The affects of Cyber Security at SAIT

Student connecting to SAIT WI-FI

With the importance of cyber security rising around the world, universities and colleges have had to react. Many phishing scams take advantage of students using networks that aren’t secure while on campus.

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) has tried to combat this by providing tips to their students. Tips that SAIT has provided include staying alert for phishing scams, deleting unused apps, and making sure you know what you’re sharing.

Andrew Campbell, who is a web and digital technology expert at SAIT, says that “Locations like coffee shops, school, home, all of these different locations have different kind of security that’s built into those environments, so your SAIT networking is more secure typically than your home environment.”

Mantaar Singh, a SAIT student shares his experiences with the networks at SAIT, “I don’t think there are many scammers, I never got contacted by any scammers, I think I’m pretty secure”.

Although many students feel like they’re secure on SAIT’s networks, that doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be a target for hackers as SAIT has many students and faculty that attend the institute, which means more information would be available than on many other networks.

Overall SAIT is trying to give advice for students to protect themselves by spreading awareness about the threats online, while also trying to make sure their networks are secure.
