The new Minecraft movie quickly became very popular across Calgary. Theaters across the city were packed with teenagers eager to see a kids’ movie about the game they grew up playing.
Loewen Powell-Plessis experienced the Minecraft movie on launch day, and says it was very chaotic. “The movie itself wasn’t that great. I mean, it was enjoyable, but every line was repeated, popcorn was thrown everywhere, and everyone was clapping. It was hard to hear the movie at times,” Loewen says.
The viewing experience was like any other. It became viral on TikTok after its launch, and it attracted more teenagers to go see it. The movie made over $160 million U.S. in North America over the weekend.
“When the opening trailer was released, it was kind of stupid the way some of the lines were delivered, so it got turned into a meme,” explains Loewen.
Cineplex told SAIT Newsfile in a statement: “We at Cineplex were thrilled to welcome fans to experience the much anticipated A Minecraft Movie on the big screen with their friends and family. With major blockbuster releases, at times movie excitement can turn into disruptive behaviour, which our team does their best to resolve in the moment…” Cineplex wants people to follow the code of conduct when watching any movies.
If you plan on watching the Minecraft movie in the next few days, be aware. It may not be a peaceful experience.
