Flood barrier construction leads to road and path closures along Memorial Drive

Flood barrier construction along Memorial Drive

Memorial Drive currently has construction taking place as flood mitigation projects continue in Calgary.

As the Sunnyside flood barrier project is moving into its next stage of development, The City of Calgary has closed eastbound Memorial drive, between 10th Street and Centre Street northwest.

This project has also caused traffic all throughout Memorial Drive and it’s expected to continue until the projects completion.

The city has also closed down many paths along both the Bow River, beside Memorial.

Paths that have been closed due to the flood mitigation spread all the way from the Peace Bridge, to Prince’s Island Park’s pedestrian bridge.

Many other construction projects are taking place on Memorial, which includes the “Inglewood Sanitary Trunk” project. This project has caused lanes to be closed along the road and also more path closures. The path closures have left cyclist’s with having to take extra steps to bike along specific paths.

Darren Purves, a local cyclist talks about how he has dealt with the path closures. “You have to go around it and find alternate routes, but you can still go through the park there too.”

While some are feeling the affects of the closed down pathways, Maggie Jugovic who walks along the paths to work everyday, says she hasn’t felt the impacts on her routine. “Not really no, I can still walk to work so it’s good.”

The closures are expected to stay in place until October of 2025.
