Cybercrime is an evolving threat all around the world. According to Calgary police, incidents in Calgary were up 50 per cent last year compared to 2023.
According to CPS data, there was a 54 per cent increase in reported ransomware attacks, and a 50 per cent increase in reported cryptocurrency related losses last year.
“We know that not all of it’s been reported… sadly, some of our investigators have seen that some people have actually lost their entire life savings, so it’s very, very impactful and we do (expect) we’ll see this grow.” Deputy Chief Katie McLellan told the Calgary police commission on Wednesday.
CPS has increased their efforts to tackle the surge of cybercrime with the development of a cyber/forensics unit. This contains a cybercrime team, a digital forensics team/investigative review team, and a blockchain investigation unit.
