Calgary Transit riders can expect service disruptions on 7th Avenue during the weekend.
Both the Red and Blue Line stations in the downtown core will be closed during service on Saturday from 2am to 10:12am. Shuttle buses will be in-place to take customers to and from their destination.
Ctrain riders are encouraged to find an alternate method for travel for the downtown sector. The closure will look a little different as they are working mainly on the switches at Olympic Plaza.
“… As the closure ends, we will be running single tracking at City Hall, Bow Valley College” – Melissa Morrow
“We will have the shuttles running on 6th [Street] and 9th Ave, and hitting all the stations that will be impacted by the closure as soon as the closure ends, we will be running single tracking at City Hall, Bow Valley College” explains Melissa Morrow as maintenance crews will be also inspecting the overhead catenary system so ensuring the pantograph wiring are safe and secure.
Melissa Morrow, Transit Relations Specialist with Calgary Transit, further adds on that these closures can have an impact on the travel during the weekend especially during Flames game that takes place on Sunday. However they are trying to reduce the pressure on the system including running three-car trains duration of the weekend, extra transit ambassadors and staff will be on hand to help direct customers.
Regular riders of the Ctrain network shares their thoughts on the closure and alternates they plan while traveling.
“… If it’s on the regular it would be a problem” – Stephen Barry
“If it’s just for one weekend, then it’s fine but you know also because I have ways to get around, I can take my bike or take an Uber or something but yeah if it’s on the regular it would be a problem” says Stephen Barry, a regular Ctrain rider who lives in downtown and relies on the Ctrain to commute on a daily basis.
“Luckily for me, I do drive as well so I drive to Dalhousie station and then get here to SAIT. So if anything I’ll probably just drive downtown and park since parking is free on the weekend in downtown”, Connor Fong shares his travel plan during the weekend.
Riders can expect delays so plan accordingly and take alternatives if possible. Morrow encourages Ctrain riders to plan their trip earlier and use tools including Calgary Transit’s website and reaching out to the customer service phone line at 403-262-1000.
