Mega Courts Pickleball and Tennis Ltd. opened its doors a week ago, as the popularity of pickleball increases throughout Calgary. The indoor facility features thirteen indoor pickleball courts, and four tennis courts. It’s the third facility to open since 2023, and is the largest within Western Canada. The new facility highlights the massive growth of the sport in such a short time. The increasing demand for court spaces has created a backlog for potential players. The Calgary pickleball Centre in Northeast Calgary has begun to cap their membership. Richard, a pickleball player who’s been playing for the past 10 years, stated in an interview with SAIT Newsfile that the rising popularity of the sport sometimes creates a lack of space.
“It’s growing almost exponentially for sure. Outdoor courts are very busy in the summertime, basically they convert a lot of tennis courts into pickleball (courts). Those are all busy over the years that i’ve played, it’s getting to the point where it’s hard to be on those courts.”
The flexibility of outdoor tennis courts have given some players an option for court space, but Calgary only features a select few dedicated pickleball courts to choose from. A positive of indoor facilities like Mega Court is that they features outdoor floors on their courts, as opposed to a gym floor.
Although Mega Courts has only recently opened up, there’s already rumors of a fourth facility coming to Calgary. With how much the game has been growing, an ever newer facility would be no surprise to see.
