55+ hockey in Calgary

Calgary, AB, Canada / RTBN

The Crowchild 55+ hockey league has been a staple in the post pro hockey community. Featuring players like Tiger Williams, Rich Preston, and Morris Lukowich, the league offers a competitive, sociable ice time. Other retired or semi retired firefighters, police officers, and emergency service workers also participate in the league.

The league currently has 8 teams and is looking to expand to 9. Each team is organized by age, past experience, and skill level. They play at the Crowchild Twin Arenas every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. NHL alumni and former Calgary Flames Assistant Coach Rich Preston was playing during Friday’s practice. “It’s got to be one of the best over 50 hockey organizations in Canada,” said Preston in a post practice interview.

The Crowchild 55+ league also does fundraising events for charity. They have an annual tournament each November where every dollar raised goes to a local charity. For the 2024 tournament, the charity of choice was the Women In Need Society.

Getting back on the ice after retirement is so important to the players of the league, and they say the social aspect and locker room vibes are just as valuable and nostalgic as their time on the ice.
