Grief support for pet loss

Economic tensions continue to mount and as a result, many Canadians can’t afford things such as veterinary care. Unfortunately, families must make the difficult decision to euthanize their beloved pets.

Cost is one of several reasons for euthanasia.

“I still wonder if I made the right decision.” said Lori, a pet owner in Calgary, who recently had to put down of one of her dogs, a 12-year old cavalier king charles spaniel named Maple. “Ultimately, it was a quality of life issue, he’d been poked and prodded enough in his long life.”

“Definitely gonna miss that goof.” said Geoff, Lori’s husband. Maple had been struggling with health problems for several years, and his quality of life was severely declining.

Maple’s family was impressed with accommodations provided at Trinity Hills Pet Hospital in Calgary. They have specialized family rooms, with blankets, seating, and pet treats to help make the animal’s final moments as comfortable as possible.

Trinity Hills also offers complimentary paw and nose imprints, and a folder containing two leaflets.

Calgary’s South Pointe Pet Hospital has a web page dedicated to supporting those who’ve lost pets. They list numerous grief counselling services in Alberta.

Saying goodbye to a pet is an unbearable experience, and with mental health issues continuing to rise, many people are at risk of mental crisis.

If you find yourself in crisis, please call the Alberta Mental Health Helpline at 1-877-303-2642 (Toll free).
