Weather Whiplash: Calgary weather going from 10 to -15 over the week

Peace Bridge near downtown Calgary.

The City of Calgary is experiencing some unusual January weather with temperatures 12 degrees above seasonal and will drop to -16 C on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the high was 10 C with very little wind, making it easy weather for the people of Calgary to go outside, walk their dogs, ride their bikes, go for a jog, or just stretch their legs.

But exactly one year ago to the day, the high was a freezing -27 C and a low of -36 C.

Jacqueline Smith of Medicine Hat was out with her husband walking along the peace bridge Tuesday morning, enjoying the warm weather, and spoke on how crazy the weather is. “This, for this date, is unbelievable,” she said. “We thought, ‘Oh, we never know what the weather is going to be like,’ but it’s beautiful out here.”

Jacqueline, like many other people outside, enjoyed the warm temperatures, but there were some others who would rather see the usual normal weather and what comes with it.

“Well, it’s too bad; it ruins the snow.” Rob Wall, a resident of Calgary, was also outside on Tuesday but wished the weather was a little cooler. “Particularly if you’re out skiing or doing something, it’s really rather refreshing.”

The usually cooler temperatures can make for some great photo opportunities, especially for those from outside the country.

“Oh yeah, I hope it gets more chilly so I can see snowfall for the first time, and I want to try more colder areas, like below zero.” Isabela Manfrin is from Brazil and wanted to experience a Canadian winter, saying that even though it’s cold outside, it’s very beautiful.

With temperatures expected to drop in the coming days, with Sunday expected to have a high of -17 C as a high, it looks like Isabela will get her wish.
