C-train delays in the month of October causing angst for commuters.

Thousands of Calgarians, rely on the C-train on a daily basis to commute between their desired destinations. However some transit commutes can turn frustrating with delays that can be often unplanned. Calgary Transit uses their Twitter (currently known as X) feed and the website to keep the public informed of the delays.

During the month of October, a total of 53 incidents were reported via the Twitter account ranging from minor delays to major issues that closed down the C-train line for several hours.

53% of the incidents can be tagged as “Unknown” as the post did not specify the context of the delay. Calgary Transit on the occasion advised C-train riders that some areas of the C-trains were running behind schedule and encouraged patrons to look at the digital television screens at station platforms for more information.

Construction and Single Tracking of C-trains during weekend was the next biggest contributor of delays at 17%, this included the major renovation project at Victoria Park and Erlton stations that connected to the Stampede Park. Thanksgiving weekend also saw Red Line closure between Brentwood and 7th Street Station that resulted in shuttle buses to be placed.

Other incidents included CPS (Calgary Police Service) matters that required Calgary Police officers to respond for assistance, medical or passenger emergencies that required trains to be held at a station while emergency crews responded. Or a couple pedestrian involved fatal collision that involved the C-train in the month of October.

Mechanical issues fall under the category of trains having trouble operating in the cold, or faulty doors. Catenary issue, the overhead wires that connect to the C-train electric power also contributed to delays in the system on a single occasion. Those delays are uncommon but can cause lengthy delays as the wires need to be fixed in a safely manner by the transit and ENMAX crews that respond.

Calgary Transit encourages patrons to plan their trips accordingly, factor in additional time in-case of unplanned disruptions in their system. Riders can use the Twitter account (@calgarytransit) or their website www.calgarytransit.com for more information.
