As winter is approaching and the snow prepares to blanket Calgary, the city is reminding residents of important updates of its snow-clearing bylaws coming into effect this season.
The City of Calgary has introduced a new policy for winter maintenance, that includes regulations for shoveling snow from private properties. According to the city’s recent announcement, residents should be aware of the new fines associated with shoveling snow into public spaces, such as roads and bike lanes.
The city is encouraging residents to consider using their lawns for snow storage after clearing your driveway or walkways. This practice not only keeps public spaces clear, but also benefits the environment by providing moisture during the spring thaw.
This bylaw says that property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks within 24 hours after a snowfall. The city also commits to maintaining its own sidewalks within the same time frame. Fines for non-compliance can add up quickly: the first offence incurs a $250 penalty, escalating to $500 for a second offence and $750 for a third within a year.
Calgary’s snow-clearing crews are already preparing for the first snowfall. Chris Hewitt, the city’s manager of mobility maintenance, says “snow can happen anytime.” Crews will be focused on minimizing disruptions caused by weather, as well as ensuring public safety and convenience.
Get ready to embrace this upcoming winter!
