After a busy year in 2018, a few things have the CFD worried as the calendar turns.
One of the biggest things is the number of large fire’s they had to head with in 2019. 24 second alarm fires were what CFD was faced with which requires double the recourse and can destroy several homes and even caused a fatality in 2018.
“One we’ve seen a spike in significant fires. Large fires we would deem to be second alarm fires or greater means we kind of double the resources when we go to a second alarm from the first trucks that arrive. So we’ve seen that spike so obviously we need to do a better job of education. Because…some of these are pretty preventable when we look at them.” – Calgary Fire Chief Steve Dongworth
The good news for CFD is that they had council approve 4 new stations for them so they’ll have a chance to try and improve their response times as Calgary continues to grow outwards.
