Day 2 of budget meetings off to a rocky start

It’s never a dull moment at Calgary City Hall.

Council went into day 2 of their fiscal budget meeting, and Jeremy Farkas kicked the day off.

Farkas once again proposed a decrease in council salary, which is slated to increase by 4 percent over the next four years. Mayor Nenshi responded by saying in order for his motion to move forward, one other councilor would need to support him. Nobody did.

Council then proceeded to discuss labor tax increases, but they soon went into a closed meeting.

It’s unclear what exactly happened in their closed meeting, but when the meeting was over the mood in city hall was very different.

Farkas voiced his anger with council saying “It is unacceptable for so many others to speak and attack positions I set forward, then when I want to defend myself and speak to it, council stages a walk, It’s incredibly unfair and disrespectful not just to me as a member of council, but to the people of ward 11.”

Nenshi quickly responded with a short but strong comment, “When you play with fire this can happen.”

At this point, council had not even opened their Budget Binder. The meeting soon came to a close as they broke for the grey cup parade. The budget meetings will continue tomorrow.
