CTrain hate crime

Calgary police are looking to identify suspect in a hate-motivated assault on a transgender woman.

The attack occurred on a Calgary CTrain on Oct. 27. The victim was riding the train southbound from the downtown core when the man began to harass her about her gender.

The victim, Mira Baker, asked the man to leave her alone and thought it was over. Moments later he approached her and punched her in the face.

Baker said she tried to defend herself while grabbing the man and screaming for help from the nearby passengers. Someone hit the emergency help button, and when the train stopped the man got off at Chinook station.

Police have released CCTV video of the suspect but are waiting on the surveillance video of the actual assault from Calgary Transit.

Baker says she takes comfort knowing the police are stepping up efforts to stop hate crimes in the city but claims the attack has left her anxious and has barely left her house since.
