SAIT students find the light

Dreary weather and the stress of school makes many SAIT students anxious. SAIT offers many resources to help combat stress, even for those who feel the affects of gloomy days. Calgary’s fluctuating weather can be an added stress for many. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression related to the changing seasons. Bright light therapy is a new service offered at SAIT to help boost the mood of students.

“As the demands of the semester increase, so should self-care.”

SAIT Educational Counsellor Julie Egars says the shift in weather can also shift someone’s overall mood. “We know that sunlight increases people’s mood, their energy and their ability to sleep,” Egars says, “and in the fall we’ve noticed people complaining about low energy levels. As the demands of the semester increase, so should self-care.”

Egars says bright light treatment can help offset low energy levels associated with Seasonal Affective Disorder. It’s designed to create the benefits of being in the sunlight without the harmful UV effects. SAIT’s bright light is available on the main floor of the library. The bright light can be treated like a regular desk lamp while you read, work, eat or even relax.
