It has been one year since green carts were implemented in all quadrants of Calgary. The City of Calgary is pleased with the way Calgarians have been utilizing green carts to help manage the city’s waste.
“This composting program is really important for sustainability of the city.”
City of Calgary Waste Diversion Specialist, Laura Hamilton says 46 per cent of waste that would be going to the landfill has instead been composted because of green carts.
“All that material would have gone to landfills,” Hamilton says, “it would have been producing methane gas and taking up space in landfills, which isn’t infinite. This composting program is really important for sustainability of the city.”
