Alberta’s school nutrition program will be expanding to feed more than 30,000 students a daily, healthy meal.
“A healthy meal not only gives students the energy they need to focus in the classroom, it empowers them to make healthy food choices outside of school” – Premier Rachel Notley
The program was originally implemented in 2016-17 school year with $3.5 million in funding to 14 trial schools. Following the initial overwhelming success of the program the project was expanded to another 62 locations, which resulted in 21,500 students receiving a daily meal.
Premier Rachel Notley announced today the program will be expanding further to serve more than 30,000 students province wide. Funding for the expansion was allocated from Budget 2018 which set aside $15.5 million to support the system to help more kids get a healthy start to their day.
