National championship dreams dashed…

Calgary, AB, Canada / RTBN

After claiming back to back ACAC Championship Gold Medals, the SAIT Trojans Men’s Basketball team booked their trip to Laval, Quebec for the CCAA National Championship.

The Trojans were hoping to claim their first ever national medal, however were stopped just short of their goal losing to the Holland College Hurricanes 83-79 in the Bronze Medal semi-final match-up.

Throughout the course of the season, the Trojans were one of the top ranked teams not only in Alberta but Canada as they cracked the national top ten ranking several times. However, with success comes the battle of adversity at times. Heading into the second half of the season, the Trojans were without their top two point producers in John Smith Jr. and Levi Taylor. That was no worry for the team though as Guard Nick Molina said they simply lived by the team motto.

“Ya it was honestly a next man up mentality. If there was someone on the court who couldn’t get the job done, we had a next man up.” Nick Molina — Trojans Guard.

Although the Trojans didn’t get the outcome they had hoped for, Head Coach Marty Birky knows there are learning objectives taken out of a tournament loss such as this.

“We had a lot of young guys at the tournament and we’re hoping they carry this experience into next season and that may bring us a national chamionship.” Marty Birky — Trojans Head Coach.
