The international Olympic committee has banned Russia from the 2018 Winter Olympics but will allow Russians to compete at the upcoming Olympics in South Korea as neutral athletes.
The I-O-C, which also suspended the Russian Olympic committee, says some competitors will be invited to participate as “Olympic athlete from Russia” without their national flag or anthem.
Russia may refuse the offer and boycott the games. Russian president Vladimir Putin says it would be humiliating for Russia to compete without national symbols. The I-O-C also imposed a fine of 15 million dollars on the Russian Olympic committee. It remains to be seen if the Russian KHL hockey league will allow players of other nationalities to play in the Olympics.
