University of Calgary Opens Germ-free Lab

The University of Calgary opens the world’s largest germ-free facility at an academic institution today.

The facility which is located in the heritage medical research building at the foothills hospital has been in the works for over two years.

The opening of the facility means researchers now have the opportunity to study how diseases and disorders are affected by specific microbiomes.

Doctor Kathy McCoy has spearheaded the project after helping start up similar facilities at McMaster University and in Switzerland.
