The questions remain unanswered as to why the Fairview Arena roof collapsed on February 20th.
There is current forensic investigations going on to determine the cause of the collapse and to ensure the communities safety. There is no completion date set for the investigation and once it is wrapped up, the City of Calgary will determine if it is financially feasible to re-open the Fairview Arena.
For the time being, users who were originally booked to use the Fairview arena will be allowed to to use the Frank Mcool Arena, which will be re-opened in April. The Frank Mcool arena was scheduled to open in the summer of 2018 but that will be pushed ahead to accommodate the circumstances. Finishing touches will be worked on as users occupy the ice surface. The Indefinite Arts Society who also used the Fairview Arena has found a temporary home at the Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge.
“The City wants to ensure that both organizations are able to continue to provide Calgarians with opportunities to participate in their programs without undue interruption,” says James McLaughlin, “So we are happy to assist with temporary accommodation.”
