For the second year in a row, the SAIT Trojans are ACAC Men’s Basketball Champions.
the team had a strong start to their season going 13 games undefeated.
The second half was a different story, the team lost two of it’s top performers over the Christmas break and had to re-structure their play style.
They ended up losing four games in the second half of the season.
First-year Charlie Conner had 33 points in the ACAC Gold Medal game and says, “We got to grow more as a team, and know ok this is what we gotta do well. This is what we gotta change, especially losing. I think some people don’t understand I think I wouldn’t say good, but it teaches you a lot.”
When asked about the lost players Head Coach Marty Birky says,”It just provided some adversity which was good for us. It just kind of changed the flow of our game, we’re more spread out now. Instead of high volume shooters, everyone has to step up and pull their own weight.”
The Trojans would never have made the final if it wasn’t for Fifth year Murphy Beya’s game-tying three-pointer with 3 seconds left in the semi-final game.
Beya says, “Once that shot went in I was just like read to go on to the next play and go on to overtime. I was ready to just like take it over.”
The men now move their focus to the CCAA National Championships March 14 – 17 in Quebec.
