New aid program announced to help people in violent situations

The Alberta government has helped 379 victims of family violence flee unsafe homes since the safer spaces certificates program began in August of 2016. The certificate program releases the tenant from their current lease, both physically and financially, if they are experiencing domestic violence.

A 50 thousand dollar status of women grant is being issued to the centre of public legal education Alberta to help landlords and property managers recognize family violence, and have resources to help before the violence escalates.

The grant is aiming to bring victims forward, who can use the safer spaces program to escape their situation.

Alberta has one of the highest amounts of domestic violence, providing 5500 families with financial assistance to escape domestic violence, and admitting 8000 women and children to shelters in 2017.
