Calgary architects and building managers are learning what it means to make their facilities barrier-free.
Beyond the Building code is an event hosted by former para-alpine ski racer Darby Young
Young says that some of the biggest challenges facing persons with disabilities include front steps, push buttons for washrooms and poor lighting for the visually impaired.
The current municipal and national building codes were written with manual wheel-chairs in mind but they don’t factor in power-chairs or the blind to the same extent.
Young is hoping that if developers can understand what it means to be truly barrier-free, facilities will become even more accessible
